Blood Center Will Use Biometrics To Positively Identify Donors

BIO-key International recently announced Oklahoma Blood Institute will deploy BIO-key's TruDonor biometric identification technology to enhance the convenience and security for blood donors later this year.

Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI), the 12th largest non-profit regional blood center in America is incorporating BIO-key's fingerprint identification solution to provide blood donors with a fast and convenient method to establish their identity.

This solution automates the donor check in process and protects donor privacy by eliminating the need for donors to produce sensitive identification forms, such as driver licenses or social security numbers. With just the simple touch of the donor's finger the software can search the OBI database to provide positive ID, reducing the check-in time and virtually eliminating human errors during the check-in process.

"At OBI, we recognize the importance of providing convenience for our donors and protecting their identity. Using the BIO-key ID solution, we are able to protect our donor's privacy while reducing the chance of duplicate donor IDs and aliases in our system," said Dr. John Armitage, Oklahoma Blood Institute president and chief executive. "We are constantly looking for ways to improve our donors' experiences and protect the integrity of the blood supply for Oklahomans."

Oklahoma Blood Institute provides every drop of blood needed by patients in more than 150 medical facilities in Oklahoma and north central Texas with the help of nearly 700 employees working with as many as 800 volunteers and 2,600 drive coordinators. In addition to its headquarters and laboratories, donor centers are located in the Oklahoma City-area, Tulsa, Lawton, Enid, Ardmore, Ada and Ponca City. OBI also operates the Texas Blood Institute in Wichita Falls.

In the world of IT, insider threats are on a steep upward trajectory. The cost of these threats - including negligent and malicious employees that may steal authorized users’ credentials, rose from $8.3 million in 2018 to $16.2 million in 2023. Insider threats towards physical infrastructures often bleed into the realm of cybersecurity; for instance, consider an unauthorized user breaching a physical data center and plugging in a laptop to download and steal sensitive digital information. Did someone break into the building? Maybe it is just an employee pulling an all-nighter. Or is it an actual perpetrator? Audio analytics, available in many AI-enabled cameras, can add context to what operators see on the screen, helping them validate assumptions. If a glass-break detection alert is received moments before seeing a person on camera, the added situational awareness makes the event more actionable. Read Now

Over the past decade, machine learning has enabled transformative advances in physical security technology. We have seen some amazing progress in using machine learning algorithms to train computers to assess and improve computational processes. Although such tools are helpful for security and operations, machines are still far from being capable of thinking or acting like humans. They do, however, offer unique opportunities for teams to enhance security and productivity. Read Now
