ASIS 2010 Offers More Than 160 Education Sessions

For security practitioners and professionals from across the security industry, the ASIS International Annual Seminar and Exhibits is the one must-attend event each year.

Set for October 12-15 at the Dallas Convention Center, ASIS 2010 will deliver more than 160 education sessions spanning 16 focused tracks. Add more than 700 of the industry’s leading technology and service integrators and you’ve got a one-stop venue for proven, value-driven security solutions.

Special programs and networking events are also on the agenda. A new Young Professionals program track will be offered for security professionals aged 21-40. For women in security, a pre-seminar track on Monday, October 11 addresses issues such as self-promotion and work/life balance. The track closes with an open session and reception.

ASIS proudly recognizes the service of security professionals serving in the military and law enforcement communities by offering free admission on Law Enforcement/Military Appreciation Day, taking place Thursday, October 12. With current government or military ID, professionals may attend the keynote with the former president of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf, as well as Thursday’s sessions and exhibits.

ASIS is partnering with several key professional organizations that specialize in distinct areas of security to support and expand this year’s educational offerings. (ISC)², ISACA, and IT-SAC bring expertise in the information security arena. A dedicated IT/information security track offers nearly 30 educational sessions on topics ranging from privacy and enterprise governance to wireless networks, access management, and cloud computing.

“For an enterprise to achieve effective and efficient security, it is critical for physical and information security professionals to work together," said Ron Hale, CISM, chief relations officer at ISACA and a presenter at the ASIS International conference. "ASIS and ISACA strongly believe in the benefits of convergence, and ISACA is pleased to be a seminar partner at this event."

On Wednesday, October 13, General Manager, Microsoft Global Security Mike Howard and SafirRosetti Senior Vice President David J. Gibbs, CPP explore the strategy behind the implementation of Microsoft’s globally integrated system and discuss the drivers that led to the business case approval.

In the session, Microsoft Global Security: Converting the Dream into an Integrated Global World, attendees will learn how Microsoft’s global systems are monitored from centralized Global Security Centers (GSOCs) to enable remote monitoring, precise response, and global interoperability.

Andrews International Executive Vice President and incoming ASIS President Ray T. O’Hara, CPP, will facilitate Friday’s opening General Session, Get Off My Cloud: Opportunities, Dangers, and Realities of Cloud Computing.

Panelists, including David Cullinane, CISO, eBay; Timothy Williams, CPP, Director of Global Security, Caterpillar; Dave Tyson, CPP, CISO, PG&E; and, Stephen Scharf, SVP & Global CISO, Experian, examine the risks associated with cloud computing and provide information to assist practitioners in effectively mitigating and protecting information assets.

In What’s New on the Floor?, a popular tradition returning again to the ASIS Annual Seminar and Exhibits, Ronald Lander, CPP, chief specialist, Ultrasafe Security Solutions and Howard Belfor, CPP, SST, regional president, First Service Security, provide attendees with highlights of the most innovative products on the show floor.

“I expect to see more IP-centric solutions,” Belfor said. “Managed services including remote access management, remote video management and storage, as well as analytics will be the focus of many of the exhibitors this year.” Belfor also anticipates practitioners will be calling upon the manufacturers and service providers to establish ROI and make a solid business case for their products and services.

Plan your ASIS 2010 experience before you leave home. A new online show planner and mobile app give you the tools to customize your entire schedule so that you can optimize your time in Dallas. Search and select the education sessions of interest to you by track, title, speaker, or day. You can also pre-schedule appointments with exhibitors, and more.

  • From Surveillance to Intelligence

Years ago, it would have been significantly more expensive to run an analytic like that — requiring a custom-built solution with burdensome infrastructure demands — but modern edge devices have made it accessible to everyone. It also saves time, which is a critical factor if a missing child is involved. Video compression technology has played a critical role as well. Over the years, significant advancements have been made in video coding standards — including H.263, MPEG formats, and H.264—alongside compression optimization technologies developed by IP video manufacturers to improve efficiency without sacrificing quality. The open-source AV1 codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media—a consortium including Google, Netflix, Microsoft, Amazon and others — is already the preferred decoder for cloud-based applications, and is quickly becoming the standard for video compression of all types.
