Fujitsu Names Christer Bergman Vice President of Biometric Solutions at Fujitsu Frontech

Fujitsu Frontech North America Inc., a provider of IT-based business solutions – including advanced technology products, biometric security and digital media solutions – has named Christer Bergman as vice president of biometric solutions. Charged with leading continued development of the PalmSecure technology and growing the product into a larger biometric solutions business, Bergman will report directly to Yoshi Masuda, CEO and president of Fujitsu Frontech North America.

Bergman brings more than 20 years of experience in information technology to his new position at Fujitsu. Before joining the company, he held several managerial and executive positions at leading Fortune 500 companies and is considered an industry expert in the field of biometrics. Bergman’s security experience includes five years at Precise Biometrics AB, an innovative security company that supplies world-leading systems for fingerprint and smart card-based authentication, where he served as president and CEO.

“Mr. Bergman’s appointment comes at a critical juncture at Fujitsu when we are looking to evolve the PalmSecure technology beyond a single product and into a broader biometric solutions business capable of addressing a wide variety of customers’ security challenges with optimized offerings,” said Masuda. “I firmly believe that Mr. Bergman's significant experience in this industry, coupled with his deep knowledge and passion for biometric and smart card technologies, will be instrumental during this important evolution in our company.”

Fujitsu introduced the PalmSecure palm vein biometric authentication technology to the United States market in 2005. The PalmSecure sensor uses a near-infrared light to capture a user’s palm vein pattern, generating a unique biometric template that is matched against the palm vein patterns of pre-registered users. This unique biometric solution uses contactless, non-traceable and non-shareable authentication methods, delivering unmatched security and privacy that is virtually impossible to forge.

The innovative PalmSecure technology has delivered proven benefits for organizations in a variety of industries, including healthcare, banking, IT, hospitality and education. It has successful applications in healthcare patient registration, time and attendance management, physical access control, government identity management, PC user authentication and OEM terminal devices, including point-of-sale systems and ATMs. Today, more than 2 million users in the United States and hundreds of organizations globally depend on Fujitsu biometric solutions for their security and authentication needs.

“I see enormous potential for Fujitsu to change the biometrics landscape,” Bergman said. “Across nearly every industry, the need and demand for secure authentication and access control solutions has never been greater. I look forward to working closely with the incredibly talented and innovative Fujitsu biometric solution group, in collaboration with our global network of partners, to meet this demand while moving our technology and our business forward.”
