A Focus on Security at ASIS

The 57th annual ASIS International seminar and exhibition will happen just a few days from now in sunny Orlando, Fla.

On the heels of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, many seminars and speakers will focus on educating attendees about the nation’s security. In fact, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano will address attendees at the Law Enforcement/MilitaryAppreciation Day Luncheon on Wednesday.

Her speech will definitely be the highlight of the convention on its final day. I’m looking forward to hearing her acknowledge all of the public and private security partnerships that play key roles in keeping our communities safe and secure. At a time when United States remembers a tragic event that stole innocent lives, we should recognize those within the community silently contributing to our safety.

ASIS President Ray O’Hara will present the Matthew Simeone Award for Excellence in Public-Private Partnership, established by the ASIS Law Enforcement Liaison Council (LELC) just before Secretary Napolitano’s address at the Law Enforcement/Military Appreciation luncheon.

This year, NYPD Shield, established in 2005, will receive the Matthew Simeone Award for their innovative approach to effective crisis management, successful executive leadership and working with all partners, sharing information about any and all threats to residents and businesses in New York City.

This will be my first experience at ASIS and to celebrate the nation’s pioneering security efforts is something I am looking forward to. Aside from jumping in and out of conference rooms and seminars, this year’s ASIS will celebrate a united nation, one that recognizes the significance and efforts of everyone keeping this country safe -- from an IP security camera to a firefighter.
