MiY Touch Reader Captures Award at ISC West New Product Showcase

The 3M Cogent MiY-Touch indoor touch-screen biometric access control reader bested more than 80 other products to win the coveted Judge’s Choice Award at the Security Industry Association’s (SIA) 2013 New Product Showcase (NPS) last week at ISC West in Las Vegas.

The MiY-Touch indoor biometric touch-screen access control reader is compact, fast and one of the lightest readers in its class. Designed with an intuitive interface and visual user feedback, MiY-Touch also is easy to use. Security systems integrators see benefits with features like built-in time and attendance functions, external USB for add-on devices, Sandbox API framework support and an optional detachable contact/contactless smart card reader that meets current SP800-116 standards.

MiY-Touch is the fifth product to be introduced in the 3M Cogent MiY product line. Accolades for the company’s MiY line include previous SIA NPS Awards, ESX Maximum Impact Awards, and ASIS Accolades.

“Each year, the companies competing in SIA’s New Product Showcase at ISC West present leading-edge security solutions that are shaping the industry,” said SIA CEO Don Erickson. “These new technologies and solutions are the drivers that are moving the security industry forward, and I congratulate 3M Cogent on their win at this year’s NPS.”

Since its inception in 1979, the NPS has been the security industry’s premier awards-based marketing program. This year’s NPS Program had 84 entries from 66 companies. In addition to the Best New Product and Judges’ Choice honors, awards were presented in twenty one product and service categories. NPS judges also presented seven honorable mention awards.

  • From Surveillance to Intelligence

Years ago, it would have been significantly more expensive to run an analytic like that — requiring a custom-built solution with burdensome infrastructure demands — but modern edge devices have made it accessible to everyone. It also saves time, which is a critical factor if a missing child is involved. Video compression technology has played a critical role as well. Over the years, significant advancements have been made in video coding standards — including H.263, MPEG formats, and H.264—alongside compression optimization technologies developed by IP video manufacturers to improve efficiency without sacrificing quality. The open-source AV1 codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media—a consortium including Google, Netflix, Microsoft, Amazon and others — is already the preferred decoder for cloud-based applications, and is quickly becoming the standard for video compression of all types.
