Mass Shooting at San Diego Apartment Leaves 1 Dead, Several Injured

Law enforcement in San Diego responded to calls of a shooting at an apartment complex near the University of California San Diego on Sunday night that killed one person and injured at least six more.

The shooter, identified as 49-year-old Peter Selis, killed a woman and wounded six others at the pool area of of an apartment complex when he pulled a gun and open fired on a party going on at the time. A witness said the shooter looked "relaxed" just minutes before the shooting.

Police responded to the call within minutes of the first round of gunshots when they found Selis in the pool area looking as if he was getting ready to reload his weapon. Three officers approached him, asking him to put the weapon down. When he did not, an officer engaged in gunfire with Selis and killed him.

It is unclear how many people were at the pool at the time of the incident, but witnesses from the event say it was a birthday party. It is unknown if Selis knew those involved.

According to a petition filed in US Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of California Selis faced significant debts and filed bankruptcy in 2015 but police did not give a motive in the shooting.

They did confirm that the victims of the shooting were identified as four black women, two black men and a Hispanic man, but said they did not believe race was a factor in the shooting. The names of the victims have not been released at this time.
