Scotland Increases Security Amid ‘Severe’ Terror Threat Level

Scotland police announced they will increase security measures at major stadiums and venues as the U.K.’s terror threat level remains at ‘severe’.

Scotland police announced they will increase security measures at Celtic Park – a football stadium in Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland – as the U.K.’s terror threat level remains at ‘severe’.

The move to step up security at the shortly follows the news that roads surrounding Glasgow’s Ibrox Stadium, home of Rangers Football Club, will be closed by police in response to the threat level.

“Taking into account the current UK Threat Level and to ensure the safety of all spectators this new arrangement will continue until further notice,” a statement from police posted on the Rangers’ website said. “The road closures will be lifted as soon as the Safety Officer and Match Commander are satisfied that the spectators are safely away from the stadium.”

On match days, roads around Celtic Park will be closed for the "foreseeable future" to prevent terrorists from using vehicles to attack pedestrians, as was seen in the recent Barcelona, Spain, terror attack.

Police Scotland is believed to be acting on the advice of counter-terrorism experts, with officers seeking to ‘enhance safety and provide public reassurance at a number of locations.’

"Police Scotland is implementing safety and security measures on the advice of experts,” chief superintendent of Celtic Park, Sharon Milton, said, “where we think they will enhance safety and provide public reassurance at a number of locations.”

Additional safety measures, which include bringing in armed guards and closing surrounding roads, have been announced for Bellahouston Park, another major stadium in Glasgow, where 35,000 fans are planning to see rapper Eminem perform this week.
