President Trump declared a new national security strategy in a document and speech on Monday, focusing on “America First.” The strategy document outlines Trump’s goals under four “pillars” and provides a blueprint for his administration’s military and foreign policy.

The National Security Strategy document is organized under four principles: Protect the American People, the Homeland, And the American Way of Life; Promote American Prosperity; Preserve Peace through Strength; and Advance American Influence. It also identifies three types of challenges to America’s security and prosperity: revisionist powers like Russia and China, rogue regimes like Iran and North Korea and transnational actors such as ISIS.

While the strategy points to some of these powers as threats, it also acknowledges that cooperation with them may be necessary as well. For example, the administration is trying to counter unfair trading practices in China while relying on China to help contain the nuclear threat of North Korea.

In his speech, Trump also stressed his “serious plan to defend our homeland,” calling again for construction of a border wall with Mexico and pledging to end “chain migration” of the relatives of immigrants and to close “loopholes that undermine enforcement” or immigration restrictions. He also wants to build up the military.

"A nation not prepared to win a war is a nation not capable of preventing a war," Trump said. "A nation that does not protect prosperity at home, cannot protect its interests abroad.”

Those factors all play a role in deciding how to configure a surveillance system, and how to effectively implement technologies like AI. Read Now

  • The Stage is Set

The security industry spans the entire globe, with manufacturers, developers and suppliers on every continent (well, almost—sorry, Antarctica). Recent data privacy regulations like GDPR in Europe and CPRA in California made waves when they first went into effect, forcing businesses to change the way they approach data collection and storage to continue operating in those markets. Even highly specific regulations like the U.S.’s National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) can have international reverberations – and this growing volume of legislation has continued to affect global supply chains in a variety of different ways.
