YouTube to Increase Security After Shooting

“We will be increasing the security we have at all our offices worldwide to make them more secure not only in the near term, but long-term,” YouTube Spokesman Chris Dale said.

Google said Thursday it plans to review and increase security at YouTube offices globally following the shooting at the company’s San Bruno headquarters. A woman shot at least three people at the office Tuesday before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officials have said the shooter held a grudge against YouTube for what she viewed as censorship of her videos about veganism and fitness. Google, which owns YouTube, said the shooter entered a courtyard on the campus through a parking garage and opened fire in an outdoor dining area.

“Thanks to the security protections in place, she never entered the building itself,” the company said in a statement.

The company added that some employees returned to the building to give first responders access to the facility.

The incident has led to questions about whether other tech giants in Silicon Valley will boost their security measures. Facebook declined to comment on whether it would increase security, but private security officers and Menlo Park Police were seen on its campus Wednesday night.
