NCR, a prominent manufacturer of point-of-sale (POS) terminals, announced Tuesday that it will be purchasing StopLift Checkout Vision Systems, who make computer vision systems for retail POS. NCR plans to integrate StopLift’s artificial intelligence tech, which detects unusual and possibly fraudulent behavior in self-checkout systems, into its POS portfolio.
"This acquisition will help NCR accelerate growth in our market-leading self-checkout and store transformation solutions," said NCR chief executive Michael Hayford. "In addition to creating new value for our retail customers around the world, StopLift's fraud detection technology will be a key enabler of our frictionless commerce product strategy."
Retailers continue to struggle with theft at self-checkout stations and work toward preventing retail shrinkage. Video analytics tech by StopLift can visually determine what happens during each transation to distinguish between normal and fraudulent self-checkout behavior.
For example, StopLift’s system can ID items that are placed in the bagging area but not meant for purchase, like a purse or a reusable shopping bag. It also flags unscanned merchandise that’s passed near the scanner—if theft is detected, the system will alert an attendant before the customer can leave the checkout station and exit the store.
