Phillies to Install Security Bollards at Citizens Park Bank

Construction crews are building a security perimeter around Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies. After the end of last season, work began to install concrete and steel security bollards surrounding the park.

Phillies security director Sal DeAngelis said that two years ago, the team took notice of the way terrorists were using vehicles in their attacks. They realized that they needed to update the park’s security in response.

"We saw the security landscape both domestically and abroad was changing, and people were trying to use different ways of harming individuals at large public gatherings. And we noticed that we needed to shore up our security perimeter around the ballpark," DeAngelis said.

According to DeAngelis, other sports and entertainment spaces have added similar security measures in recent years.

"There are no threats to Citizens Bank Park at this time. But we're constantly monitoring what's going on in the country and in the world and feel that this is a necessary step for us," DeAngelis said.

The bollards are about three feet high and 10 inches in diameter, DeAngelis said. The bollards will be painted burgundy to match the ballpark structure and will be accompanied by more trees.
