More than 600,000 Affected by Michigan Health Care Data Breach

More than 600,000 Michiganders may have had their information compromised by a data breach of several major health care systems.

The information of more than 600,000 Michigan residents may have been compromised in a data breach involving many major health care systems. According to reports, those affected by the data breach may include customers of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Health Alliance Plan, McLaren Health Care, Three Rivers Health and North Ottawa Community Health System.

Wolverine Solutions Group, which sustained the data breach, said it has mailed letters notifying all affected individuals.

According to the company’s website, exposed information could include names, addresses, dates of birth, social security numbers, insurance contract information and numbers, phone numbers and medical information. Wolverine Solutions Group does not believe personal information was extracted.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and the Department of Insurance and Financial Services Director Anita G. Fox have urged Michigan residents affected by the data breach to take steps to help safeguard their information that may have been compromised.

"Wolverine is offering two levels of identity protection to individuals affected by the breach," Fox said. "If you receive a letter from the company, we urge you to read it carefully and consider enrolling in the free credit monitoring service."

Nessel said her office is seeking additional information about the breach. Michigan law does not require the Attorney General to be notified of data breaches, and the office first learned of the Wolverine breach through media sources.
