SIA Endorses Bill To Boost Security At Wastewater Treatment Plants

The Security Industry Association has endorsed a new bill that would improve security at wastewater treatment plants. The “Wastewater Treatment Works Security Act of 2009” (H.R. 2883), introduced by Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Texas, on June 16, would authorize $200 million in annual Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grants through 2014 for certain security enhancements and would require security assessments of wastewater treatment plants that include a site security plan.

San Borja is primarily a middle-class district of the country’s capital, Lima, covering an area of 4 square miles and with a population of more than 100,000. The system was installed in advance of the annual meeting of the 21 members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), which met in Lima in November.

JetBlue Airways' new Terminal 5 accounts for 30 percent of JFK International airport's total traffic with its 26 gates, capable of handling more than 500 flights daily. Keeping a watch on an estimated 20 million passengers per year who pass through 40 ticket counters and the central security checkpoint— the largest in the United States with 20 screening lanes—was a challenge for the JetBlue security team in planning the terminal's surveillance system.
