CDW Government Inc. Helps Secure Colorado Town’s Recreation Center

CDW Government Inc., recently announced that it provided the Town of Parker, Colo., with an Axis Communications video surveillance security solution for its new 100,000-square-foot recreation center, allowing staff and public safety officers to monitor the multi-million dollar facility from on- and off-site locations.

The Town of Parker called on CDW-G for advice on the solution that would best meet the security requirements for the Parker Fieldhouse, which includes a gymnasium with two regulation-size hardwood basketball and volleyball courts, an in-line hockey rink with seating for 200 spectators, an artificial turf field with spectator seating, a rock-climbing tower, a suspended running track, a fitness area and batting cages.  With thousands of young people and adults expected to use the facility weekly for team sports and other activities, and just two to three facilities staff on duty at any time, the town needed a technology solution that would easily enable staff to monitor the sprawling facility.

Working with CDW-G to evaluate leading technology solutions, the town selected 18 motion-activated Axis Communications cameras that are positioned inside and outside the fieldhouse, providing around-the-clock surveillance.  Axis software is outfitted on a file server to record video, and a front desk monitoring station serves as a landing point for all video feeds, allowing employees to view up to 16 camera feeds at one time.  The software also enables police dispatchers to log onto the system and view the cameras remotely via a Web page.  In the event of a security incident, dispatchers can quickly convey critical information to officers responding on site.

“Drawing upon CDW-G’s expertise and access to leading technology brands, we selected a surveillance solution that fits our needs perfectly,” said Terry Denison, Town of Parker systems analyst.  “The cameras not only act as the eyes for our front desk staff, allowing them to see what is going on throughout the fieldhouse, but also provide near-instant information to law enforcement.  Using technology to extend our footprint, we are able to cost effectively strengthen the safety of residents using this new state-of-the-art facility.”

The town selected Axis 221 network cameras, which provide high-quality images under all lighting conditions over IP networks, and vandal-resistant Axis 216 fixed dome network cameras positioned in the hallways outside the fieldhouse locker rooms.  The Town of Parker also called on CDW-G to relay video feeds via coaxial cable from six analog CCTV units fixed to light poles outside the building to the fieldhouse recording and monitoring stations.  The analog video feeds are digitized into a real-time IP video stream by Axis 240Q video servers, also selected with the assistance of CDW-G.

“Increasingly, state and local governments are deploying video technology to supervise large facilities effectively and share information quickly across agencies,” said Jim Grass, CDW-G senior director of state and local sales.  “The Parker Fieldhouse is a perfect example.  Its video surveillance system allows the limited facilities staff to monitor and effectively manage the 100,000-square-foot complex, improving the safety of citizens as well as the integrity of the building.  At the same time, the town enabled local public safety officers to view the cameras remotely in real time, providing valuable insight into any situation that may occur.”

  • Evolving Cybersecurity Strategies

Organizations are increasingly turning their attention to human-focused security approaches, as two out of three (68%) cybersecurity incidents involve people. Threat actors are shifting from targeting networks and systems to hacking humans via social engineering methods, living off human errors as their most prevalent attack vector. Whether manipulated or not, human cyber behavior is leveraged to gain backdoor access into systems. This mainly results from a lack of employee training and awareness about evolving attack techniques employed by malign actors. Read Now
