Australian Sports Venue Sees Results After Upgrading From Analog System

Avigilon recently announced that Canberra Stadium, an international sports venue in Australia’s capital city, has deployed the Avigilon High Definition surveillance system to monitor patrons, ensuring improved public safety and overall venue security.

Canberra Stadium upgraded from an analog surveillance system that was ineffective and difficult to maintain to the Avigilon HD surveillance system, including 11 Avigilon cameras ranging from four to 16 megapixels.

Security officials manage the system using Avigilon Control Center network video management software to instantly identify details necessary for positive identification, leading to faster response times and better overall protection. Canberra Stadium has also leveraged the facial and license plate recognition capabilities of the Avigilon HD surveillance system to achieve positive identification, even at night, something officials were previously unable to do.

“I have total faith that the Avigilon HD surveillance system can deliver the image quality and facial and license plate recognition capabilities required to assist police with criminal investigations,” said James Kiwi, events and operations manager for the Territory Venues and Events Enterprises Services Division of the Australian Department of Territory and Municipal Services. “Before, we simply could not guarantee this level of security.”

With a 28,000-seat capacity, Canberra Stadium has also achieved significant cost-savings since deploying the Avigilon HD surveillance system. For example, the venue now requires 10 to 15 percent less personnel to monitor protected areas during events -- a cost savings of about $22,500 each year. The stadium has also been able to deploy fewer cameras because of the power, image clarity, and performance of its two Avigilon 16 megapixel cameras -- a total cost savings of between $20,000-$40,000.

“To provide a secure environment during entertainment events, venue facility managers around the world have realized the need to be proactive in their efforts to curb the mounting security threat, be they nuisance or life threatening,” said Dave Tynan, vice president of global sales and marketing at Avigilon. “By deploying Avigilon’s complete HD surveillance system with its high quality megapixel cameras and the industry’s only network video management software designed for megapixel performance, Canberra Stadium can confidently ensure patron safety.”
