Companies Announce PSIA Product Plans

Standards for the physical security industry took an important step forward at ISC West with the successful demonstration of interoperable products from Honeywell, UTC, Tyco, Hikvision, Arecont Vision, IQinVision and ObjectVideo.

It was clear that the objective of the PSIA -- to develop a systems specification supporting video, storage, analytics, access control and intrusion -- has been achieved. Of even more significance was the fact that the leaders in the access control and intrusion market not only showed the ease of implementing products to the PSIA’s Area Control specification, but plan commercial products relying on this spec in 2012.

Honeywell, which created a host and analytics for the demonstration, has plans for access control and intrusion products conforming to the PSIA spec for 2012. UTC, which demonstrated an access control implementation, has two access control and intrusion platforms that will incorporate the spec in the next year. Tyco, which demonstrated access control and intrusion products, likewise has targeted 2012 for multiple implementations of the PSIA spec in products.

“Honeywell is committed to open standards,” said Ken Addy, vice president of engineering for Honeywell Security Group. “We have put clear prioritization for PSIA compatibility into our next generation security offerings including video surveillance, access control and intrusion products. We’ve started launching PSIA compliant products this year and compliance is a key part of Honeywell’s long term strategy and roadmaps going forward.”

“Actually taking a specification from concept to real products is a significant achievement,” said Chuck Hutzler, vice president of product management for Tyco Security Products. “We are committed to getting the PSIA specification in access control and intrusion products in 2012.”

“The PSIA specs supporting interoperability in access control and intrusion are a reality, which is why we have commercial products on our roadmap for the next year,” said Mike Regelski, CTO of UTC Fire & Security-Global Security Products.

Further endorsing the PSIA efforts was Ray Bernard, a recognized consultant in risk/security management. “The PSIA systems suite of specifications is what the industry wants and needs. Providing interoperability between all parts of the physical security system will save customers a considerable amount of money and reduce the time and frustration that often accompanies product integration.”

Also active in the PSIA Area Control effort are Stanley Security (Sonitrol), ASSA ABLOY, VidSys, NICE and Inovonics.
