And the New Product Showcase Winners Are...

March 29 was a celebratory day in Las Vegas for 28 winners of the 33rd Annual Security Industry Association’s (SIA) New Product Showcase (NPS) Awards. The top winners spoke at the “New Product Showcase Winners’ Forum: Brining Innovation to the Forefront.”

All 2012 winners were announced on Wednesday, March 28, 2012, as the ISC West exhibition kicked off with a marching band and recognition of the security industry’s best product picks of the year, which was announced later in the afternoon. Out of 70 entries, TKH Security Solutions received the “Judges’ Choice Award” and MorphoTrak was awarded “Best New Product.” Representatives on behalf of both organizations spoke about the award-winning products.

Jennifer Martin, chair of the SIA NPS Committee acted as moderator for the session dedicated to the winners. Martin provided a bit of history behind SIA dating back to its formation in 1978. She insists that the program is to remain innovative and relevant to the security industry with judging done by people highly qualified to (voluntarily) assess the qualifications of product entries – this year all judges had more than 500 years of experience between them.

“We’re looking for technology, product value and innovation,” Martin said.

Five honorable mention awards accompanied the usual 23 Best New Product and Judges’ Choice Awards from the judges.

  • The Evolution of IP Camera Intelligence

As the 30th anniversary of the IP camera approaches in 2026, it is worth reflecting on how far we have come. The first network camera, launched in 1996, delivered one frame every 17 seconds—not impressive by today’s standards, but groundbreaking at the time. It did something that no analog system could: transmit video over a standard IP network. Read Now

  • From Surveillance to Intelligence

Years ago, it would have been significantly more expensive to run an analytic like that — requiring a custom-built solution with burdensome infrastructure demands — but modern edge devices have made it accessible to everyone. It also saves time, which is a critical factor if a missing child is involved. Video compression technology has played a critical role as well. Over the years, significant advancements have been made in video coding standards — including H.263, MPEG formats, and H.264—alongside compression optimization technologies developed by IP video manufacturers to improve efficiency without sacrificing quality. The open-source AV1 codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media—a consortium including Google, Netflix, Microsoft, Amazon and others — is already the preferred decoder for cloud-based applications, and is quickly becoming the standard for video compression of all types.
