Data Breach: 63,000 Social Security Numbers Compromised at University

The University of Central Florida said unauthorized access to its computer network has resulted in an unprecedented data breach of personal information of some current and former students and employees.

UCF discovered the situation last month and immediately reported it to law enforcement. The school then launched an internal investigation with the help of a national digital forensics firm.

According to UCF, the investigation has revealed unauthorized access to Social Security numbers for about 63,000 current and former students, staff and faculty members. However, credit card information, financial or medical records or grades have not been compromised.

Those affected by the incident are being notified via letters that should arrive next week. One year of free credit monitoring and identity-protection services will be offered to the vulnerable individuals.

According to UFC’s new data security website, the school is opting for a thorough review of their online systems, policies and training to determine what improvements need to be made following the incident.
