Security Questions Persist After Attempted Assassination Attempt of Donald Trump

A day after the a failed assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump, a number of security questions persist for the Secret Service.

According to a report from CNN, the shooter—who was killed by Secret Service after he began firing into the rally crowd in Bethel, Penn.—was outside of the security perimeter. He was reportedly able to climb onto a nearby roof before shooting.

Here’s more from CNN:
President Joe Biden said Sunday he has directed US Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle “to review all security measures – all security measures – for the Republican National Convention.”

“I’ve directed an independent review of the national security at yesterday’s rally to assess exactly what happened. And I’ll share the results of that independent review with the American people,” Biden said.

The FBI will lead the investigation into the assassination attempt. Both Congress and the Department of Homeland Security is expected to investigate the incident.

Witnesses, according to CNN, saw the shooter carry a rifle outside of the secured area before the shooting. Local law enforcement reportedly also saw the shooter acting suspiciously near the rally magnetometers.

Trump was shot in the ear during the attempt but was “fine” after the attack and is planning on attending the Republican National Convention this week in Milwaukee.

One rally attendee was killed and two others were critically injured.
