UL Solutions Launches Artificial Intelligence Safety Certification Services

UL Solutions Inc., a global leader in safety science, today announced the launch of artificial intelligence (AI) safety certification services, enabling comprehensive assessments for evaluating the safety of AI-powered products.

AI is rapidly transforming everyday life, powering everything from smart devices to industrial systems while also raising serious concerns about safety, ethics and misuse. When AI technologies fail, they can cause real-world harm, erode trust and disproportionately impact people and property. To help address these issues, testing and assessments performed by UL Solutions will focus on robustness, reliability, transparency, accountability, privacy, fairness, safety, security and freedom from bias.

“As a leader in the field of safety science, UL Solutions recognizes the extraordinary benefits that artificial intelligence, when used safely and ethically, can offer to society,” said Jennifer Scanlon, president and CEO of UL Solutions. “However, AI can also be misused and present risk. Establishing the safety of AI-embedded products is absolutely vital for fostering public confidence and helping ensure the responsible and widespread adoption of beneficial AI technologies.”

UL Solutions’ AI certification testing and assessment will be guided by UL 3115, the Outline of Investigation (OOI) for Safety of AI-Based Products, which was published on Oct. 31. This framework outlines the certification requirements for AI-driven innovations. As an OOI, UL 3115 serves as a set of safety criteria developed by UL Solutions to assess emerging technologies that lack an established UL Standard. Products that meet the requirements of an OOI through UL Solutions testing and assessments may earn the UL Mark, indicating compliance with safety requirements.

These requirements will also serve as the basis for development of services for AI processes and systems.

UL 3115 is designed to evaluate adherence of an AI innovation to globally recognized international standards, such as ISO/IEC, and to assist with compliance with emerging regulatory frameworks. UL Solutions will collaborate closely with its customers to certify their AI-enabled products according to these stringent safety requirements.

UL Solutions is observing a significant increase in products incorporating advanced AI capabilities, such as devices’ ability to learn and continuously improve their performance, both autonomously and through seamless wireless updates. These dynamic changes in the marketplace and within product technologies highlight the growing demand from UL Solutions’ customers to effectively demonstrate the safety of their cutting-edge AI-powered products.

UL Solutions provides AI-related services across the entire product lifecycle from concept and design through development, deployment and operation. In addition to AI safety certification, UL Solutions offers advisory services to help customers adopt and use AI responsibly in their product development processes, and an AI Marketing Claim Verification service, which specifically focuses on confirming the transparency of the underlying AI models of customers’ AI-powered products.

It did something that no analog system could: transmit video over a standard IP network. Read Now

  • From Surveillance to Intelligence

Years ago, it would have been significantly more expensive to run an analytic like that — requiring a custom-built solution with burdensome infrastructure demands — but modern edge devices have made it accessible to everyone. It also saves time, which is a critical factor if a missing child is involved. Video compression technology has played a critical role as well. Over the years, significant advancements have been made in video coding standards — including H.263, MPEG formats, and H.264—alongside compression optimization technologies developed by IP video manufacturers to improve efficiency without sacrificing quality. The open-source AV1 codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media—a consortium including Google, Netflix, Microsoft, Amazon and others — is already the preferred decoder for cloud-based applications, and is quickly becoming the standard for video compression of all types.
