London Megastructure Unifies Physical Security with Advanced Automation

The 900,000-square-foot 40 Leadenhall commercial development deploys Genetec platform to streamline operations for 10,000 daily occupants.

A massive new landmark in London’s insurance district has deployed a unified physical security platform to manage its daily operations and incident responses. The 40 Leadenhall development, which spans more than 900,000 square feet of commercial office, retail and amenity space, implemented the technology to support an environment serving up to 10,000 daily occupants.

Project officials selected Genetec Security Center to tie together disparate hardware and software systems under a single user interface. The open-architecture platform allows the facility's management team to integrate multi-vendor hardware, customize access privileges based on employee roles and scale technology as building requirements evolve.

The smart building infrastructure includes more than 200 surveillance cameras, 250 doors and 2,600 data points. All components are managed through the central software and hosted on dedicated network servers. To streamline emergency and operational workflows, the facility utilizes collaborative decision-management software. The system automatically triggers specific response protocols for environmental and operational events, including power outages, water leaks and severe weather conditions.

Access control and guest management systems from industry vendors, including HID Global and STid, have been integrated into the platform to replace traditional physical credentials. Tenants can navigate the facility using mobile wallet credentials on smartphones, while visitors receive digital QR-code passes. Network cameras from Axis Communications provide visual verification across the property.

Security personnel and administrative staff interact with the system via specialized workstations and mobile tablets distributed throughout the complex. Receptionists handle visitor enrollment directly through the interface, while control-room operators monitor live video feeds and generate audit reports.

By incorporating interactive digital floor plans into the central platform, building operators can locate hardware devices, review security events and pull up live video feeds dynamically. The security platform also connects directly to a proprietary building smartphone application, allowing tenants to issue virtual guest passes, receive automated arrival notifications and access on-site amenities like fitness and cycling facilities.
