AI Camera Network Boosts Early California Wildfire Detection

Leveraging advanced sensors and visual intelligence, a statewide initiative alerts emergency personnel before 911 calls are made.

Emergency responders across California are utilizing an expanded network of more than 1,200 cameras paired with artificial intelligence to detect wildfires ahead of traditional emergency reports.

The ALERTCalifornia program, managed by the University of California San Diego, integrates advanced camera technology from Axis Communications to provide continuous monitoring in high-risk and remote regions. The system automatically alerts public safety personnel upon identifying smoke or early fire activity.

According to data from CAL FIRE, the platform flagged approximately 3,600 wildfire incidents during a recent 12-month span. More than half of those detections occurred before any 911 calls were placed by the public, allowing crews to verify threats and deploy resources quickly. A detailed overview of the system's integration can be found in the Axis Communications customer story.

In addition to fire suppression, state and local agencies utilize the system for broader disaster resilience, including monitoring floods, storms and debris flows. Live feeds from the camera network remain accessible to the public to improve community awareness.
