Why Embedded Identity Protection Is Overtaking Standalone Solutions

Standalone identity theft monitoring tools are falling out of favor as consumers reject feature bloat and extra logins in favor of security native to their existing financial and insurance apps.

When it comes to protecting sensitive data both personally and on behalf of others, the typical view has always been that you can never be “too secure” or “too protected” online. While a noble sentiment, this mentality often resulted in overly bloated packages and/or a litany of fragmented solutions that didn’t work together to provide the best protection.

As a result, today’s consumers are experiencing a kind of “feature overload” that ends up dissuading them from using the tools they have access to. Often because these tools require that the individual set up a separate account and deal with managing a new set of credentials instead of a seamless integrated protection solution.

On a positive note, over 55% of respondents to the second edition of our annual Iris® Powered by Generali Identity & Cybersecurity Concerns Survey (ICC Survey) indicated they have access to at least one of three key security tools: credit monitoring, identity monitoring/dark web surveillance, or fraud resolution services. However, this “feature overload” apathy demonstrates why the traditional approaches to cybersecurity aren’t driving meaningful engagement.

In part because while some services like credit monitoring and fraud resolution are valuable, others provide little more than digital “security theater” and exist largely to check the “protection” box. While it’s logical to assume that more access to protection tools equals better overall protection, when the tools have little actual protection value and/or are overly complex to use, the actual outcome is consumer indifference.

Many in this industry believe that better consumer education about the threats and protection tips are the answer. While we generally agree, in our experience, you get a better, more sustainable outcome by meeting users where they are versus expecting them to wholly conform to expectations after reading a few blog posts. Additionally, the idea that it’s better for a user to spin up another account (which puts a whole new set of personally identifiable information (PII) at risk), to get access to another protection service is unreasonable in 2026 when most brands are focused on streamlining the consumer experience.

This desire was reflected in the findings from our ICC Survey which reported that consumers overwhelmingly prefer embedded protection in tools they already use (38%) versus a dedicated portal or website (18%). On top of that, 80% of consumers said they’d be likely to use identity protection features if they were integrated into a mobile app they already use.

This demonstrates that an integrated offering with frictionless access provides multiple benefits, including reducing the lack of engagement caused by feature overload, minimizing the potential exposure of PII that comes with new accounts and the most important benefit; it’s what users want from their platforms. As our ICC Survey findings show, users don’t want another login; they want protection built into ecosystems they already trust.

Another benefit of frictionless, integrated protection services is increased adoption and platform use. Even outside of cybersecurity and identity protection, when accessing a particular platform or service becomes complicated, adoption of it drops. This is why it’s beneficial for banks, insurance companies, and other firms who touch and in some cases are responsible for PII already to integrate a frictionless protection solution that gives their customers peace of mind.

Peace of mind is important because, as our ICC Survey findings showed, among victims of identity theft or fraud in the past two years, most (85%) reported experiencing at least some stress while resolving the incident. Half of the victims surveyed said it caused either significant stress (34%) or more stress than they’ve ever experienced (16%). When asked about other emotional impacts, a majority reported feeling anger (59%) or frustration (56%). While over one-third felt helpless (36%) or anxious (34%), nearly as many described themselves as overwhelmed (32%).

This presents companies looking to offer protection with a unique opportunity to help address these concerns that impact victims when their information is compromised but also improve the perspective of their firm among customers by being proactive. As demonstrated by the ICC Survey findings, three-quarters (76%) of Americans believe the organizations they do business with are effective at protecting consumer data. However, only one-quarter (25%) say these organizations are very effective.

While the longstanding logic has been “the more protection the better” our recent survey findings have shown that simply adding another login to access that protection isn’t always beneficial. While consumers are willing to engage with a platform that offers them complimentary services, they want to manage those added services in the same streamlined way they’re used to managing the primary services of that platform.

Companies that are already interacting with their users via digital ecosystems have the unique opportunity to differentiate themselves from the competition by focusing less on the checking all the feature boxes to ensure they’re “fully protected” and more on useful, seamless integration.
