Gallagher Security and Gallagher Animal Management have connected electric perimeter fencing in the Toronto Zoo orangutan habitat directly into the facility's central Command Centre platform.
The system provides wildlife care staff with real-time visibility into fence voltage levels and triggers instant alerts if an animal or object makes contact with the energized wire. Integrated security cameras automatically display video footage corresponding to fence alerts, allowing personnel to evaluate situations remotely before sending a team on-site.
The 500-acre Toronto Zoo houses more than 2,000 animals across 200 species and attracts 1.3 million visitors annually. While Gallagher Animal Management has supplied perimeter fencing to the zoo for more than five decades, this project marks the first direct integration between the company's electric fence energizers and its security management software.
The zoo's broader infrastructure also utilizes mobile credentials for seasonal workers and contractors, field officer communication tools and intercom systems in high-risk animal habitats. Management plans to expand the Command Centre platform to govern access control at the zoo's upcoming Community Conservation Center.
