In a recent report from IMS Research, the U.S. market for network cameras, video servers and NVRs is estimated to have increased by a massive 45 percent in 2007. However, the market has got off to a slower start in 2008 and it seems unlikely that the market will grow as fast this year as it did last year.

An integrated IP video solution has been used to upgrade two Greek casinos to fully-digital CCTV surveillance, in full compliance with the demanding Greek gaming laws. The Casino Rio, located north of the Western port city of Patras and Casino Xanthi, which is situated in the Northeast city of the same name, are now both benefiting from vastly improved CCTV systems.

Newton Memorial Hospital opened its doors in 1932 with 40 acute care beds and 10 bassinets to provide healthcare to Sussex County, N.J. After acquiring 10 acres of land adjacent to the original parcel in 1961, NMH constructed a wing to house a new radiology department, clinical and pathology laboratories, an emergency room, an intensive and coronary care unit and a 20-bed general medical surgical unit. This expansion increased the hospital’s bed count to 148.

How’s this for a nightmare scenario? Stealthy bad hats sneak up on an IP video camera attached to a remote fence and unplug it from its Ethernet cable. In its place, they jack in a laptop computer and -- voila! -- they’re now inside that surveillance network where they can manipulate other cameras, reprogram door locks, fiddle with access credentials and perhaps wreak havoc all over the target organization’s intranet.
