Secure Access System Protects Tesla Motors Corporate Headquarters

LaserCard Corp. and Tesla Motors recently announced the successful implementation of an optical memory card-based LaserPass Secure Access System for Tesla's corporate headquarters in San Carlos, Calif.

Under the agreement, Tesla Motors appointed LaserCard as the supplier and prime contractor for the design and installation of the system which will form the model for a corporate-wide standard. Installation of the next phase at Tesla's research and design center, in Rochester Hills, Mich., will start in the coming weeks.

A high-value feature of the overall package is a client fulfillment service, newly-launched by LaserCard, which provides Tesla with fully personalized ID badges. The Facilities department at Tesla Motors uses the LaserPass Access Data Capture System to gather information about each employee and the data is automatically sent to LaserCard's print server via a secure communication protocol named LaserLink. Within 24 hours, the fully personalized card, containing printed and digital images of the cardholder plus his or her biometrics, is delivered to Tesla Motors.

The LaserPass Access System imposes a secure perimeter through which all badge holders can only pass after validating their secure optical/proximity cards. This process enables each individual's access rights for that day, which are controlled by the proximity technology embedded into the LaserPass badge.

"Thanks to LaserCard, securing our facility was painless, we are relieved of being in the badge production business, and we can get on with our core mission -- developing and manufacturing electric vehicles that exemplify design, performance, and efficiency."
