Seagate Announces Hard Drives Designed For Digital Video Surveillance Systems

Seagate Technology recently announced its SV35 Series hard drives, specifically designed for optimal performance in digital video surveillance systems, now have a top capacity of 1 Terabyte, providing 32 full days of high-resolution video streaming. In addition, Seagate is broadening its hard drive offerings targeted at video surveillance applications to include the Seagate Barracuda ES and EE25 Series hard drives.

Surveillance digital video recording (S-DVR) systems are overwhelmingly replacing CCTV and non-technical surveillance and security systems. Hard drive storage is a critical component in S-DVR systems, providing a proven, fast and highly efficient solution to monitor, protect and store video data. S-DVR market growth is driven by the needs of the homeland security, retail, casinos/hospitality, and financial and utility industries, among others.

IMS Research forecasts that the worldwide market for S-DVR systems will eclipse $3 billion by 2010, while the market for IP surveillance NVRs will grow to more than $200 million. What's more, IMS Research forecasts the mobile video surveillance market will reach almost $500 million by 2011.

Digital video security systems now enable sophisticated software capabilities to automatically preview and flag security events in seconds, where manually reviewed images would have taken days or even months to locate similar information. High-resolution image capture is moving the quality of stored video from grainy and marginally useful to crisp and incredibly detailed images used to combat crime, save lives and improve business practices in a wide variety of industries.

The booming demand for surveillance capabilities among large and small organizations has spawned development of a myriad of new systems and technologies -- and these offerings require specialized storage solutions.

"Our goal is to provide the security industry with a wide set of tools to help its mission in protecting lives and property worldwide," said Patrick King, senior vice president and general manager of Seagate's consumer electronics business unit. "The entire SV35 family of hard drives optimizes performance, saves power and improves reliability in digital video surveillance systems. The critical nature of these applications and systems dictates a hard drive made specifically for security, and Seagate is the only company to address the unique needs of surveillance video system manufacturers and integrators."
