Maryland Juvenile Detention Center Uses Petards Technology

Petards Inc. recently announced that it has been chosen to provide the security monitoring solution for the Victor Cullen Center, a campus-style juvenile detention center located in Sabillasville, Md. The installation -- which connects Petards Universal Video Management System (UVMS) with approximately 100 closed circuit television cameras placed across the 30 building, 500 acre campus -- is the third that Petards has done for the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services

"Petards' open platform and digital video recording capabilities gives the Victor Cullen Center the flexibility they need for both new installations and upgrades of existing facilities," said Vernon Rocco, engineering manager for Initial Electronics Inc., the contractor working with Petards on the Victor Cullen Center project. "And, with its centralized monitoring capabilities, their security staff is able to keep close watch on activities that are happening throughout a widely dispersed campus-style environment."

The Victor Cullen Center, which had closed in 2002, is currently under renovation with plans to open later this year. Petards, working in conjunction with Initial Electronics, are installing 35 cameras along the more than 6,000 feet of perimeter fencing to enable the assessment of alarms. Another 65 fixed and PTZ cameras will be installed in and on 10 buildings across the campus.

All cameras will be routed to a centralized IT building on the campus, which will house Petards UVMS digital video management system. Video images will be routed to monitors in two different control centers on the Victor Cullen campus, which both will have customized touch-screen interfaces to the perimeter security system. These PC-based access stations will each have two monitors, enabling access to both live and stored video.

"Petards UVMS is an ideal solution for facilities like the Victor Cullen Center," said Frank Baitman, president of Petards Inc. "It offers an intuitive, user-friendly interface that enables security staff to quickly get up to speed and supports smart searches of archived images for fast response to events on the ground. Moreover over, the Petards UVMS scales easily, so it can support the addition of more cameras at the facility if needs should arise in the future."
