ONVIF Accelerating Efforts To Global Standard

With the support of multiple new members, ONVIF now accelerates its efforts towards an open global standard for the interface of network video products. Several working groups were recently established with focus on conformance tools and the next version of the specification.

“We initiated five different working groups in the beginning of March, and many of the member companies are now directly involved in the development work,” said Ken Iwasaki at Sony Corp., member of ONVIF’s Steering Committee. ”The broad member base, and the new members’ participation in committees and working groups, is very valuable for the development of the second version of the specification.”

Already in the end of 2008, ONVIF released the first version of its core specification and test specification, both publicly available on the forum’s Web site at http://www.onvif.org. These specifications cover local and remote device discovery, device management, imaging configuration, media configuration, real-time streaming of audio and video, event handling, video analytics, PTZ control and security. One of the recently formed working groups is dedicated to storage, another on continuous development of the core specification, while the remaining three focus on support and conformance issues.

“Conformance is a central matter for any standardization forum,” Iwasaki said. “We are now working intensively to complete the test tool and conformance process that will enable manufacturers to market ONVIF conformant products. Our strategy to provide well-defined documentation and tools is key to ensure product interoperability, which is what the market is looking for.”

The ONVIF test tool and conformance process are planned to be released within the next month.
