ESA Supported Energy Legislation Approved By Congress, President

During Christmas week, the Senate approved by unanimous consent to send HR 5470 to the President for his approval which he gave on December 28 by signing the bill. HR 5470 excludes “an external power supply for certain security or life safety alarms and surveillance system components from the appliation of certain energy efficiency standards under the Energy Policy and Conservation Act.”

The bill makes a correction to the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, which required electronic devices to meet certain efficiency standards while in “no-load” mode. Because the requirements applied to security and life safety devices ESA began coordinating with other members of the industry to successfully include language in energy measures to exclude security devices from the requirement. The coalition was successful in having the language included in two bills, S 3059 and HR 5470.
