Russian News Agency Says Airport Blast Killed 31

The early report posted by the Itar-Tass news service also says 130 people were injury by the explosion at Moscow's Domodedovo Airport at 4:32 p.m. Monday local time.

An explosion at Moscow's main airport at 4:32 p.m. local time today has killed 31 people and injured 130 others, the Itar-Tass news service reported. The report quoted Tatyana Morozova, identified as a spokeswoman for the Moscow inter-regional investigation department on transport of Russia's Investigation Committee.

The explosion occurred at the entrance from the international arrivals section and filled the building with smoke, according to Itar-Tass, which reported there were two dozen international flights arriving from 2 p.m. local time until the explosion, with passengers disembarking during that period from flights that had originated in New York City, Dubai, Ashgabat, Cairo, London, Vienna, Munich, Hamburg, Tokyo, Hurgada, and Istanbul -- so they "might have been staying in the area of the explosion that occurred not far from one of the restaurants," its report stated.

U.S. media including The New York Times posted reports about the explosion that said 20 million passengers annually use the airport, which is the Russian capital's main international airport.
