Megapixel Video Cameras Help Determine Photo-finish Winners at Track and Field Club

Megapixel video cameras from Arecont Vision are being used in European sporting events to help officials better determine race results in close competitions. At the Vojvodina Track & Field Club in Novi Sad, Serbia, the Arecont Vision 1.3 megapixel IP camera is capturing detailed images of sporting events so that athletes, and the order in which they finish, can be more easily identified.

“Our advanced megapixel technology is expanding camera application possibilities beyond the traditional video surveillance or visual imaging/robotic uses,” said Raul Calderon, Senior Vice President, Arecont Vision. “The detailed images from a megapixel camera provide an improved video experience with HD or better resolution and the ability to pan, tilt and zoom electronically on both live and recorded video.”

The Vojvodina Track & Field club uses the Arecont Vision 1.3 megapixel IP camera along with software to record and review races. The camera is placed on the inside track of the stadium and the race is recorded on one laptop and a second laptop receives the live stream. Live video of the race is also shown on the big screen display at the stadium. Because of the portability of the system, the camera can also be used to decide results in biking, horse racing or even dog racing events. According to Dusko Milicic, international photo finish judge at the Vojvodina club, the megapixel camera system will be used at all future sporting events in case an appeal needs to be decided.

“The megapixel IP system is portable and easy to install on the laptop computers,” said Mr. Milicic. “I also like that it can record at 30 frames per second. The camera's clear images have already been used to settle appeals in a couple of races by determining the correct order of athletes.”

Arecont’s 1.3 megapixel (1280 x 1024-pixels) cameras are ideal for capturing details that can help determine a winner in a close competition. Both full frame and individual regions of interest can be captured for review. The camera is designed with MegaVideo® massively parallel image processing architecture that involves more than 6 billion operations per second to provide simultaneous streams of data. Arecont Vision's camera line ranges in image resolution from 1.3 to 20 megapixels, including camera models providing advanced capabilities such as dual day/night and panoramic viewing. Using H.264 compression, Arecont Vision cameras deliver greater compression efficiency to solve system issues related to bandwidth and storage.
