Smiths Detection Unveils High-Speed Checked Baggage Scanner

Smiths Detection, a provider of threat detection and screening technologies, has introduced a high-speed scanner that airports can use to screen checked sluggage for explosives. The scanner is called the HI-SCAN 10080 XCT.The company worked with Analogic Tehcnologies -- an analog semiconductor company -- to create the product.

“This exciting new product raises baggage screening to a new level," said Mal Maginnis, president of Smiths Detection. "It is designed specifically to meet the unique challenges faced by airlines and airports every day. It offers an unparalleled combination of size capability and throughput rate with the efficient space footprint and long-term value that operators need."

The new system has a larger tunnel size so that screeners can scan large items through an automated inline handling system. The combined imaging technologies can screen 1,800 bags per hour.

The scanner was designed to meet both European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) and U.S. Transportation Security Authority (TSA) standards for checked bagge inspection as well as support global efforts to standardize security screening procedures and processes.

The scanner will be available in late 2012.
