ComNet NetWave Wireless Selected as Link Between Parks and City Hall in Upstate NY Town

Typical of many cities and towns across the country who are facing challenges balancing the safety and security needs of its resident with the costs involved in providing a workable security solution, a small upstate New York town was facing the challenge of bringing back CCTV video, access control information an intrusion data from a sports recreation facility located about three quarters of a mile from the security center located in the town hall. The recreation area consisted of several baseball fields and buildings over large site.

It was determined for the safety and security of the residents using the facility and the facility itself, that it would be a benefit to monitor the activities going on there during operational hours and while the facility was closed. Since the main security center was located about ¾ of a mile away, the town was looking for the most cost-effective transmission solution possible without compromising functionality. Additionally, the recreational area’s buildings were unconditioned. Given those circumstances it was decided to have the central monitoring station located in the town hall.

The integrator heading up the project, knowing the cost parameters involved, suggested using a wireless transmission solution. All the recommended CCTV, access control and intrusion equipment was IP based, the terrain between the recreational areas and town hall was obstruction free, and it was conducive to wireless Ethernet solution.

Because of it’s easy to use and implement functionality, the ComNet NetWave® wireless Ethernet transmission product line was specified. In this case, even though the bandwidth demand at this time was relatively light, the NW7 point-to-point high-throughput Wireless Ethernet products were selected to handle the transmission of the two CCTV cameras, access control data and alarm data. By using high-throughput devices such as ComNet’s NW7, if the need for more equipment becomes necessary, the 240 Mbps duplex bandwidth is more than sufficient to transmit back to the head end.

ComNet NetWave® wireless Ethernet equipment is designed for ease of installation. Applications such as this are a natural fit for a wireless solution. Using wireless Ethernet saves the user a considerable amount of time and money versus the cost to install an alternative medium.
