São Paulo–Guarulhos International Airport Streamlines Security Operations

São Paulo–Guarulhos International Airport (GRU), the busiest airport in Latin America, has implemented Quantum Secure’s SAFE for Aviation software suite. São Paulo–Guarulhos International Airport Streamlines Security Operations With the physical identity and access management software solution in place, the airport is better prepared to handle the spike in travelers Brazil experienced following the World Cup commencement on June 1 as well as the predicted surge ahead of the upcoming 2016 Summer Olympics.

In addition to the two major sporting events, Brazil is also in the midst of modernizing security management at its airports. Brazil relies heavily on its smaller airports as a means of mass transportation and with the influx of tourism and growth, a huge push toward modernizing airport operations is now underway.

Among the applications GRU has deployed are the following aviation-related SAFE modules:

  • Privilege Management Application provides the ability to define credential types and associate these credentials with necessary privileges and security checks needs, including the lifecycle management of these relationships.
  • Integrated Watch List Management Application allows the user to manage the internal/external watch lists and update the TSA No-fly selectee list to search for a possible match and highlight the same during the enrollment process.
  • Aviation Mobile Infraction Management gives complete capability to the user to perform tasks and take actions on their smartphones and tablets.
  • Aviation Visitor Management manages the complete lifecycle of visitors, including creation of an audit trail of visits and visitors checking in and fingerprinting schedule management for authorized signatories.

SAFE has also streamlined and increased the effectiveness of the credentialing process by allowing the airports to more efficiently handle the credentialing issues for contractors and employees. While workers go through the government certification process, a temporary badge may be issued. Upon clearance from the government, a permanent badge is issued and the temporary badge is immediately terminated, thus ensuring there are no orphan badges still active.

“SAFE is designed to the TSA paradigm, so we have brought those concepts to GRU, which are meeting and exceeding ANAC’s current capabilities, making airport security more traveler-friendly, secure and streamlined,” said Ajay Jain, president and CEO of Quantum Secure. “With SAFE, GRU is able to streamline its security and credentialing operations, ensure compliance with TSA-level policies and future-proof its physical security infrastructure while also benefiting from significant cost reductions.”

SAFE for Aviation comes with pre-defined policies, workflows and procedures for issuing badge credentials and granting/revoking access to airport facilities while simplifying adherence to aviation-specific compliance regulations, audits and security directives, minimizing insider threats and promoting greater operational security. It automates processes for conducting background checks for new airport workers and obtaining security clearances for secured locations from the governing bodies, such as the TSA in the United States or ANAC in Brazil. In addition, users get flexible self-service access rights to allow approved parties to enroll their own employees and subcontractors and grant them physical access rights while complying with and enforcing security directive.
