5 Tips for Working with Cable

  1. Don’t run coax too close to electrical wiring.  Keep coax and electrical cables at least 6 inches apart because electrical lines can cause interference in coaxial cable.
  2. Be careful not to crush the cable. When installing, choose a stapler specifically designed for the job. When using a hammer, use care not to pound too hard against the staples and cabling.
  3. Don’t kink the cable. When working with coaxial cable, be sure to avoid sharp twists and bends.
  4. Choose cable with good electrical performance. Ethernet twisted-pair cabling, for example, is subject to rotation, stretching and bending. This can result in irregular gaps between the conductors and degrade signal integrity.
  5. When purchasing coax cabling, look for one that has a screw-on connector. Push-on connectors typically don’t make good connections.
