Concern for Rail Security
Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” viewers that there should be more concern for rail security following the commuter train crash in New Jersey that left one person dead and over 100 more injured.
"We have to be concerned about trains, public transportation, public places, public events," Johnson said when asked whether trains are a weak spot terrorists could exploit. "TSA itself has been stepping up its rail safety efforts, but their principle focus right now is and should be aviation security. That's the reason they were created. But they do have this rail safety mission."
Though rail security officials have said the crash in New Jersey was not of malicious intent, rather mechanical failure or human error, plenty of witnesses at the scene said they first thought it was a terrorist attack.
One man, whose name is unknown, who has worked at the terminal for 17 years said his first thought was a bomb exploded when he was interviewed by CNN.
“That’s just the way the world is now.” He said.
Johnson assured viewers that the National Transportation Safety Board and other government officials are “all over the crash in Hoboken.”
