President Trump’s Executive Orders on Border Security

President Trump's Executive Orders on Border Security

Several outlets have reported that President Donald Trump will be signing two executive orders on border security today, Wednesday, January 25. The orders will help to move ahead with Trump’s famous claim of building a wall at the border of Mexico.

The wall will be included in an executive action called “Border Security and Immigration Enforcement Improvements,” according to NPR. This action will call for hiring more Border Patrol agents as well as expanding detention space and emphasizing criminal offences related to the Southern border.

The second executive action is titled “Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States,” and will direct the departments of Homeland Security and Justice to withhold grant money from so-called sanctuary cities.

The president will also restore the Secure Communities Program, which ceased to operate in 2014, after being used by the Bush and Obama administrations to force state and local governments to share fingerprints and other data to help officials identify undocumented immigrants.

The executive actions are to be signed one day after the president tweeted, “Big day planned on NATIONAL SECURITY tomorrow. Amond many other things, we will build a wall.”
