A pharmacy chain’s initial order for 80 locations was 1,300 cameras, more than 16 cameras per location. And a major international retailer will spend $15 million for its two-year asset protection and safety program contract extension. There are many reasons why retailers employ video surveillance. Theft is, of course, a prime motivation. American retailers lose billions of dollars per year due to theft from shoppers and employees.

A recent Harris Poll survey indicates that 96 percent of U.S citizens feel the federal government and law enforcement agencies should be able to use video surveillance in an effort to counteract terrorism and help protect U.S. citizens in specific public places.

Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama, spanning 151 square miles and boasting a downtown population of nearly 230,000. Like any major city, it has its share of crime and vandalism. To help combat this and provide a safe environment for residents and visitors, the city has installed 40 video surveillance cameras throughout the metropolitan area.
