Security, for all intents and purposes, is a male dominated industry, or as Lucy Rivero puts it, “Mexico is full of machos.” But make no mistake, Lucy is security south of the U.S. border.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano recently announced two enhancements to federal facility security -- initiatives that further strengthen the Department’s ability to protect thousands of government buildings across the United States one week prior to the anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing.
Mexipuerto Ciudad Azteca subway station, designed to ease the traffic problem in Mexico City and outlying areas, transports more than 150,000 passengers a day. At rush hour, as many as 1,000 travelers per minute board the trains. Mexipuerto’s security committee wanted to install a surveillance system that could help the transportation hub ensure the safety of its users. The technology needed to integrate with the station’s TCP/IP network to provide optimum performance during service hours without sacrificing image quality.
The Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards are complex and fairly disruptive. Few would argue that. The risk-based performance standards guidance alone is nearly 200 pages long, and many companies have had to re-allocate or hire staff, facilitate training and certification, and contemplate ways to re-imagine corporate processes in order to control access to chemicals of interest.

Trying to wrap up ISC West and my visit of one day seems hard to do. Weather forced my flight from Dallas to be cancelled late Wednesday, but when I arrived for the Friday finale, I found the show hall crowded and anxious customers ready to talk turkey.

Now that ISC West is over, the task at hand is sorting through all the new products for placement in future issues, touching base with industry contacts and reflecting on the state of the industry. One popular theme this year focused on companies positioning to offer solutions instead of products.

The rule of thumb in protecting government facilities is simple—any application with a large coverage area is a candidate for a video surveillance system, and that includes the perimeter. Since most government facilities have limited manpower for security-related tasks, with video surveillance systems, only a few people are needed to watch over areas that would be virtually impossible to patrol with 100-percent effectiveness.
