Miami International Airport Rolls Out High-Capacity Digital Communication, Video Surveillance System

To increase passenger and personnel safety, Miami International Airport (MIA) selected Ericsson Federal to supply, deploy and execute systems integration of a high-capacity digital communication and video surveillance system.

Ericsson Federal’s custom solution for MIA includes deployment and systems integration of an access control system and alarm system to secure more than 1,000 access points across the airport. The solution includes live high-speed video surveillance, synchronized with two-way audio intercoms and supports both digital video and audio recording. The system includes live full frame video feeds from more than 500 cameras -- along with audio and telemetry information -- linked to security workstations throughout the airport.

Ericsson Federal also oversaw systems integration of the surveillance information into Miami International’s alarm and dispatch systems for efficient process management. Additionally, Ericsson Federal is responsible for the surveillance verification and test lab at the airport. At this lab, all multi-vendor surveillance equipment and system components are tested and verified in the surveillance system before being implemented at Miami International.

“Our reputation as a leader in critical network operations was a key reason that Ericsson Federal was selected as a partner for this crucial security upgrade,” said Doug Smith, head of Ericsson Federal. “Our solution architects, systems integration experts and deployment team worked side-by-side with personnel from Miami International Airport to ensure that the solution would meet all their requirements -- nothing less is acceptable when it comes to the safety of travelers.”

Serving more than 15 million passengers each year, Miami International Airport is in the top 30 worldwide for total passengers. As part of the airport’s capital improvement program and the Federal Aviation Administration’s airport security initiative, an enhanced security system was required. The solution was needed to increase passenger and personnel safety, improve video surveillance capacity and reduce overall incident response time.

“The Ericsson Federal solution provides for a more hardened target while leveraging efficiencies in responding to security alarms and incidents. Officers can now monitor and manage the security network from workstations with easy-to-use interfaces,” said Lauren Stover, director -- security and communications for Miami International Airport.
