New Jersey Medical Center Uses RFID To Protect Infants

RF Technologies has partnered with Ocean Medical Center of Brick, N.J., to help protect infant patients with the recent installation of Safe Place Infant and Pediatric Security Solution.

The hospital chose the system because of its ability to track babies throughout its infant unit, sound an alarm and automatically lock all doors in the event of an attempted abduction.

“We selected Safe Place as the best choice to update our security system because of its tracking feature, ease of installation and user-friendly qualities,” said Karen Dademo, nurse manager for Maternal Child Services at Ocean Medical Center. “We also received a strong recommendation for Safe Place from nurses and administrators at our sister hospital, Riverview Medical Center, who have been very pleased with the system.”

Ocean Medical Center installed the Safe Place solution to replace its RF Technologies’ Code Alert system in the infant unit. The Safe Place solution satisfies the security needs of the center, which delivers approximately 1,200 babies annually.

“We are pleased that our Safe Place Infant Security Solution meets Ocean Medical Center’s needs for a cost-effective system that supports its infant unit,” said Keith Koby, executive vicepresident at RF Technologies. “It is gratifying that our product will play a key role in helping to safeguard the infants the medical center services each year.”

RF Technologies completed the two-week installation July 26. The company installed a computer and the latest version of Safe Place software so staff can easily interact with the system, and interface with all doors in the unit so they can be locked the instant the alarm is activated. In addition, any attempt to tamper with the system wiring or infant transmitters by unauthorized personnel will send an alert to the monitoring system.

“The installation was 100 percent seamless,” Dademo said. “There was no interruption in our services, and the installers were quiet and completely respectful of our medical staff. We couldn’t have asked for anything better.”

RF Technologies provided on-site clinical education, through a registered nurse, on Safe Place for one full week. This ensured that internal staff trainers were well-versed, and provided a follow-up refresher course 60 days after the initial training session. Practice abduction drills have taken place and will be conducted quarterly so that the staff maintains its familiarity with the system.
