Security Researcher Cancels Talk after Pressure from Camera Makers

The presentation was on flaws in IP cameras

A talk covering problems in IP cameras has been cancelled after pressure from manufacturers, according to a report.

Gianni Gnesa was scheduled to give a presentation titled “Abusing Network Surveillance Cameras” at a conference in Singapore. IP cameras connect to the internet, which some argue can make them inherently vulnerable.

Gnesa planned to expose the vulnerabilities in surveillance and demonstrate how someone could use exploit them. He decided to pull the talk after legal pressure from manufacturers.

On Twitter, Gnesa said, “If companies would use half of the energy they use to get after researchers to fix their products, we would all be more secure.”
