New Jersey Agency Modernizes Municipal Surveillance Operations

A new unified security platform allows Fort Lee officers to access license plate data and school video feeds through a single digital map.

The Fort Lee Police Department has modernized its municipal safety operations through the implementation of a unified security platform to manage citywide surveillance and digital evidence.

Positioned at the entrance of the George Washington Bridge, Fort Lee manages a daily flow of more than 300,000 vehicles. To address the challenges of high-volume traffic and transient crime, the department adopted an open, IP-based system designed to streamline real-time response and inter-agency collaboration.

The department currently manages more than 200 cameras across the borough. Using a federation feature, the agency has integrated video feeds from local schools and parking structures into a single interface, providing dispatchers with a comprehensive view of the area.

Automated license plate recognition technology has also been integrated into the system. When an incident is reported, dispatchers can access video and vehicle data from an interactive map to relay intelligence to officers in the field.

For criminal investigations, detectives use a digital evidence management module to centralize files. The system allows investigators to send secure links to witnesses or business owners, who can then upload video footage directly into a case file. The software automatically logs the evidence and handles various video formats, reducing the time spent on manual collection.

Department leadership stated the unified platform allows the agency to scale its public safety initiatives according to its budget while maintaining a proactive approach to community protection.
