New Ophir Zoom Lens Enhances Long-Range Surveillance

Advanced SWIR technology allows security operators to identify targets and track laser wavelengths at distances exceeding 35km.

MKS Instruments has unveiled a continuous zoom lens designed to provide high-resolution imaging for demanding tactical and security environments. The Ophir SWIR 50-1000mm f/5.5-9.5 is a long-range solution optimized for Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) detectors, enabling clear observation through atmospheric haze and low-visibility conditions.

The system utilizes a broad spectral range of 0.6 to 1.7 microns. This capability is specifically engineered to detect and track various laser wavelengths, including 850nm, 905nm, 1064nm and 1550nm. By maintaining focus and line-of-sight stability throughout the zoom cycle, the lens ensures consistent imagery during rapid transitions on stabilized platforms like drones or maritime vessels.

Engineered for durability, the hardware features an athermalized architecture that maintains optical performance despite extreme temperature shifts. The unit is rated for operation between -32 and 75 degrees Celsius and includes an IP67-sealed front element to protect against moisture and dust.

The lens offers a horizontal field of view ranging from 14.5 degrees for situational awareness to 0.7 degrees for target identification. Measuring 391mm in length and weighing 3.6kg, the compact footprint is intended for seamless integration into multi-axis sensor payloads used in global defense and security missions.
