Genetec Urges Enhanced Identity Governance Amid AI Threats

As AI-driven attacks increase in sophistication, physical security leaders call for more than just routine password changes to protect networks.

Physical security systems face growing cyber threats from AI-enhanced credential attacks on connected cameras, access controls and cloud services, according to a recent industry research.

Survey Highlights Threats

Genetec Inc.'s survey of over 7,300 professionals found 58.7% of organizations hit by more phishing and smishing attacks, with 41% seeing rises in physical or cyber incidents overall. Social engineering topped attack vectors for 43.5% of respondents. Weak credentials on devices often create overlooked entry points into networks.

Expert Warnings

Genetec Principal Security Architect Mathieu Chevalier said AI lets attackers impersonate users, tailor social engineering and exploit vulnerabilities faster. Relying solely on password changes or basic hygiene falls short against these accelerated risks. Organizations must actively govern access and identity across systems.

Recommended Strategies

A governance-first approach is urged, which entails moving beyond isolated controls: eliminate default and shared credentials, enforce multi-factor authentication or passkeys and use certificate-based methods for devices with regular rotation.

Align IT and physical security teams for unified standards, better risk visibility and coordinated responses. Treat physical security like mission-critical IT through routine access reviews and controlled updates.
