The American Public Transportation Association has awarded Metro Transit the Gold Award in the safe, effective and clean category for light rail and streetcars.
The industry accolade recognizes rail transportation systems that achieve significant safety and security milestones through innovative programs. Metro Transit earned the distinction for its ongoing work advancing its Safety & Security Action Plan, a comprehensive strategy focused on improving conditions across the transit system, supporting agency employees and strengthening engagement with riders and community partners.
A central element of the plan involves expanding the physical presence of personnel throughout the transit network. The agency deployed a combination of Metro Transit police officers, community service officers, transit ridership investment program agents, supplemental private security guards and community partners.
According to agency data, these coordinated deployment efforts contributed to measurable improvements in customer satisfaction and rider perceptions of safety. The initiative also resulted in a reduction in serious crime, customer complaints and property damage across the transit system's light rail and streetcar lines.
