AI Weapons Detection System Enhances Hospital Security

An Illinois healthcare network intercepted dozens of illegal firearms and knives using automated concealed weapons scanners.

Rising workplace violence in healthcare facilities is driving medical providers toward automated safety solutions to protect staff and patients.

According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 73% of all non-fatal workplace violence incidents occur within healthcare and social assistance industries. High rates of harassment and physical threats have forced nearly 60% of nurses to leave or consider leaving their positions.

In response to these risks, a multi-campus healthcare group in Illinois deployed an artificial intelligence-driven concealed weapons detection system across its facilities. The technology, known as the Apollo 500, screens visitors at building entrances to identify hidden firearms and blades without disrupting normal foot traffic.

The system detected nine firearms and four knives during its first month of operation, including one firearm identified within 30 minutes of installation. Across a single year, the system stopped more than 20 firearms and nearly 180 knives from entering the healthcare facilities.

Security experts note that visible, automated screening provides a proactive barrier compared to passive awareness campaigns, which often fail to prevent weapons from entering buildings.

Internal surveys conducted by the healthcare provider showed a significant change in worker confidence following the installation. Prior to deploying the detection technology, 17% of employees reported feeling safe at work. After the screening program was established, employee safety perception increased to 68%, with 87% reporting that the system reduced the likelihood of dangerous incidents on campus.
