Binance Verifies Replenished Reserves Following Multi-Billion-Dollar Hot Wallet Breach

The exchange has restored 95% of lost funds and released cryptographic proof data as phased withdrawals prepare to reopen.

Following an unauthorized intrusion that drained an estimated $6.3 billion from platform hot wallets, cryptocurrency exchange Binance announced it has generated zero-knowledge cryptographic proofs allowing customers to independently audit company reserves.

The cryptographic verification covers 10 primary digital assets, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tether and Solana, confirming holdings are collateralized at a minimum 1-to-1 ratio. Delivering on its pledge to absorb all losses directly via corporate funds, the company confirmed it has replaced roughly 95% of the compromised assets from its own balance sheet.

The remaining 5% consists of less liquid, secondary tokens that take longer to source on open markets through industry liquidity partners. A subsequent reserve snapshot expanding coverage to these additional assets is scheduled for later this week, with computational cryptographic generation estimated to require up to 50 hours.

While platform-wide withdrawals were suspended immediately following the breach, incident remediation teams plan to begin a progressive rollout to restore outbound transactions across select blockchain networks starting Tuesday.

The incident, widely cited as the largest digital asset theft on record, has drawn scrutiny across both the private sector and federal law enforcement. According to reporting by The Associated Press, blockchain analytics firms TRM and Chainalysis have linked the intrusion to TraderTraitor, an elite North Korean state-sponsored cyber unit. Investigators noted that attackers siphoned funds across 10 blockchains in roughly 20 minutes before deploying self-destruct mechanisms to impede forensic analysis, while U.S. officials, including President Donald Trump, confirmed federal investigations into potential foreign state involvement are underway, the publication stated.

The initial phase of restoring platform liquidity has already triggered significant capital movements. As reported by TechCrunch, Binance processed $4.6 billion in withdrawals against $1 billion in incoming deposits during a nine-and-a-half-hour window on Sunday, resulting in a net outflow of $3.6 billion, or approximately 2.1% of its total assets under management. Furthermore, the FBI confirmed that TraderTraitor was actively converting the stolen funds primarily into Ethereum to facilitate subsequent money-laundering operations.

To guarantee transparency without exposing sensitive user financial data, Binance deployed a combination of Merkle trees and zk-SNARKs (zero-knowledge succinct non-interactive arguments of knowledge). The architecture enables customers to mathematically confirm that their balances are fully backed in company reserves while maintaining user privacy and shielding account balances from public view.
