Civilian emergency alert platforms in Ukraine and Russia were breached in coordinated cyber disruptions, according to a report by Reuters. The intrusions caused unauthorized push notifications warning populations of imminent nuclear, chemical and ground combat threats.
Ukraine’s primary air alert application broadcasted unauthorized notifications targeting residents in Kyiv and surrounding regions. The rogue alerts claimed incoming ballistic missile strikes and radiation dangers. Ukrainian officials quickly issued all-clear updates, identified the activity as unauthorized enemy interference and temporarily suspended the application while secondary sirens and municipal channels remained active.
Simultaneously, the mobile alert application operated by Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations experienced an intrusion that broadcast spoofed emergency warnings across Russian jurisdictions. The Russian agency acknowledged the breach, stating that technical teams took steps to isolate the compromised notification systems while advising the public to rely on verified government communications.
